The Story Lives On

Change is inevitable, even in the world of books. Do I think ‘traditional’ books will go out of style? In a sense, yes. I think that there might be a point at which we will more commonly begin to…

The Three Ways to Succeed in Writing

The Three Things That Will Catapult Your Work to the Next Level

Taking each slow and terrifying step across the rickety old foreboding bridge, she felt the disheveled wooden oak planks beneath her feet shuffle. Her knees began to buckle as she shook violently, trying to hold it together. She heard each block of the frail passage crackle and snap together with each motion, sending a wave of terrifying claps reverberating all the way down to the other side. The hiss of her breath as she inhaled — as slowly as possible, of course — only served to increase the tension in the already-thick and moist air, a humidity which slowly ate away at the rotted wood beneath her feet. The silence otherwise was deafening, it screamed so loud. She stopped for a moment to gather herself, before looking up with a new grit and pure determination. It was at that moment that she realized the cold, hard, unfathomable truth that she didn’t even exist. Looking down in search of her hands, she tried to extend her palms and open them wide to peer down at them, glancing at her epidermis to verify her own corporeal reality, but she couldn’t see a thing of herself. Her whole body was just gone, but there she remained, awake, aware, and conscious, but for how long? The truth is, she was merely the figment of the imagination of the author writing this story, someone he dreamed up to describe the cover photo of this very story to describe the process of writing to his Medium audience. Her entire existence was a piece of fiction to serve as an example of the power of description. The photo was just the photo of the day on Unsplash. She could have just as easily been a villager in Indonesia or a construction worker in New Jersey, or even something inanimate, like a stone building at sunset, in Prague.

The use of imagery, as you’ll see, is extremely powerful in writing. It helps to place the reader directly into your story, immersing them into the tales you’re trying to tell. From Voltaire’s Candide to Nietzsche’s Zarathustra, and even all the way back to Plato’s dialogues, thinkers and writers in all genres have told their tales through the eyes of fictional or quasi-fictional characters. This will not be one of those stories.
