When is best time escalate a problem at work?

Do it at the wrong time it becomes cry wolf

In any company, there will be many inter-departments work going on.

Finance department is asking engineering department to provide data to enable their work, shift team is requesting support from day team to speed up night shift work, etc etc.

There’s always inter department conflicts, or request that is not agreeable within working level. That can be due to many different reasons, most common ones are different priorities, lack of resources, disagreement in the outcome.

These kind of problems are difficult to resolve at working level since these are opinion driven conversations. Managers intervention can speed up the discussion by confirming the priority and resources available. It might means slowing down another on going project or totally delay it.

Yet, sometimes I would rather work on it at working level than escalate it to managers. Why?

You can, decide on behalf of the boss to change the priority without informing him or her. As long as you can manage both new and old priority delivery.

Taking a risk to work on something that your boss is not asking doesn’t always yield disastrous outcome. Yet, it could be a golden opportunity to show case your capacity to manage more work than is assigned.

Some managers really spend too much time discussing about priorities. Debating which work gets done first will only means both works get delayed.
