Deciding on a Computer Science Focus Area

Upon starting as a student at UVA, I already had a clear set path in my mind in terms of what I wanted to do when I graduated; I wanted to be a computer scientist. However, it’s really not as simple as that. In this day and age, companies not only want people who're majors fit the title that they need, but they also want people with experience in certain areas. These areas vary anywhere from web development to database experts and deciding which of these focus areas to gain experience is can be quite stressful. The stress accumulates even further when realizing that choosing a focus area can equate to choosing a career.

In speaking with alumna Jackie Morin, I learned that choosing a focus area can be more of a natural process rather than a forced one. She stated that a class she took at UVA, Web Programming Languages with Professor Soffa, she decided to pursue web development. I was worried that I might not find my calling as easily as she found hers so I asked for advice. She advised that students who want to find a focus area they are passionate about taking many CS electives so that a student can see into the many different fields of computer science.
