Surprisingly defining your fears improves Your Mental health

An ancient strategy of how to deal with life’s challenges/stress

Like most people at beginning of the year I usaualset my goals for the new year(i.e lose weight, start reading, start a side hustle, etc). However, 6 months later I still have not started any of my goals. Why? like most people I always feel like I don't have time or motivation to action my goals. Then I discovered as humans we suffer from the fear of the unknown; because of evolutionary ancestors in the Serengeti jungle in order to live longer one always had to be fearful of unknown situations(i.e. they could be lion/cheetah on the horizon). However, in 21st-century civilization, we don't need to have so much fear; however, our brains have default settings of flight /fight response mentality.

Every day the brain is bombarding you with fearful hypotheticals especially when you attempt to try something new. This constant stress/fear causes you to have a lot of anxiety, especially during the covid19 pandemic; being under lockdown most people suffered frightening mental health issues like stress & depression.

So what is the solution?…. Rather than being fearful of the unknown; one possible solution to reduce your anxiety is to define all your fears on paper. This forces you to clearly understand your fears for what they are and try to evaluate them objectively and see if the is any merit in your brain creating these fearful situations in your minds.

This ancient technique of defining your fears has been used successfully for over 2000 years by people like USA President George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, and Great philosopher Seneca. The basic principle of this philosophy is that one should pretend that the worse possible outcome of a project/goal has happened;

then what? how can one salvage the situation? how can you prepare yourselves for bad outcomes?

This sort of question will help you to start looking for solutions to your potential problems/fears. This in turn will help reduce your anxiety; because now that you know your fears it does not make you feel helpless anymore. You are in control because you are analyzing your fears/problems objectively, but you are also finding find solutions to solve your worst fears or problems.
