How a Squirrel Helped me Laugh and Heal

Dealing with having an undiagnosed disease for 38 years

In the summer of 2001, I desperately needed the inner healing of nature. It helped me deal with the tough news my doctor was about to give me. This Irish physician who had trained at the University of Dublin sounded serious.

My heart pounded. I was anxious.

I arrived at his office. I sat down listening to all he had to say.

“Kevin, me lad, I’ve finally found out why you’re sick. I followed your immune system makers for over a year and a half. That told me you have some kind of autoimmune disease. The B12 level blood test was 88. That’s extremely low.

I went back on a bus to one room in a home I shared with an elderly Portuguese man named Manuel. Back to face the truth of this unknown enemy that had been plaguing me 38 years.

From the time I was born B12 deficiency had been slowly eating away at my energy like a parasite.

I would sit by my window and see a squirrel come racing along a power line. It stuffed its cheeks with as many grapes as it could hold.
