Are You Hiding Laziness Under A Shroud Of Busyness?

Sometimes hustle is just a facade for a true slacker

I’m a big fan of routines. If you put me on a desert island with only a spoon, a dictionary, and a Rubik’s Cube, I’d develop some kind of daily routine around the 3.

However, we can develop poor routines as well that become a ritual of sorts. The worst of these routines is an idle type of busyness. This idle busyness perverts the wonderful benefits of a routine. A routine should be freeing your mind to think, but busyness occupies your mind so you don’t have to think.

It’s a strange sort of laziness where you’re actually in constant motion. I’m using the word “lazy” because the busyness keeps you from the hard work of thinking about difficult things.

The statements above are the language of idle busyness. If you use these words on occasion, it’s understandable. If you use them constantly, you may be busy for the sake of being busy.

I know this language well, I find myself saying the above statements all the time.

That thing that’s not important right now may be very important. In fact, you may just be making yourself busy to put it off. This can very well be the epitome of laziness.

To deal with the problem you’re putting off would actually be hard work. It’s much easier to just fill your day with busyness.

I also say “idle” when I refer to busyness. This is the part where you’re on autopilot and your mind is stopped from doing the hard work of thinking. The things you should be thinking about are pushed out…
