Reflection Paper

Throughout the past four to five weeks the nature of my writing has slowly changed. After the second post, I seem to focus more on my details in paragraphs and errors while writing my posts. For example, one change I noticed was that after writing a paragraph, I would analyze it first. Then, I would fix any spelling mistakes and any errors in my sentence structuring before continuing the next paragraph. Now, I specifically look for any passive voices, repetition, vague or run on sentences.

Furthermore, these past few weeks have also shown me what parts in writing I am good with and which parts I still need improvement on. After, reading through all of my posts, I am proud of how I was able to catch the reader’s attention and smoothly transitioning them to the main topics of each post. On the other hand, I am still trying to surpass one obstacle in my writing which is creating sentences that are not confusing. Most importantly, sentences that do not contain any passive voices. Nonetheless, surpassing struggles are one way to show readers how a writer is improving their writing. I believe that each writer has different ways of showing readers their growth as a writer. For example, one way I showed my growth as a writer was including multiple points of entry and incorporating ideas from other authors by using proper quoting and paraphrasing techniques.

Despite the fact that I am trying to surpass a couple of obstacles in writing, I still have trouble creating a brief thesis. Not having a clear thesis interferes with my writing because it is necessary for the readers to have a clear understanding of the main statement of the paper. Now that I understand the structure of this course, on the upcoming series of posts, I will spend more time perfecting a thesis before focusing on other parts of my paper.

Although, this was my first time taking a hybrid class. It was not difficult as I pictured it. I thought that posting academic blogs would be intimidating. However, reading other academic blogs was quite fun and interesting. The only thing I would change in this course is switching the Tuesday emails to Monday. By switching the days, it will help students not rush on Tuesdays to finish any assignments due at midnight.

In conclusion, this class and the assignments were very easy to follow. I would definitely recommend this class to any student that has a busy schedule and has taken an online class before. It is a perfect class for those who can manage their time well.

Since Post #1 was our first writing assignment on our research topic, I did have a lot more errors. I had to check and fix spelling and article errors throughout the entire paper. While fixing my spelling and article errors, I also noticed that I did not use any quotes sandwiches. I had to revise my notes once again and add a statement introducing the quotations. In addition, I also had to fix various sentences because I had a lot of repetition of words and phrases. Lastly, I had to add a sentence at the end of my conclusion that demonstrated the readers that I am open minded about this research topic.

While writing Post #2, I was more aware of my writing, especially in my spelling. An issue I had in this post was that I did not add a lot of details in my thesis nor in my introduction. For example, in my introduction, I did not have a hook. I decided to add a quote because I found a quote that was perfect to describe why rhetorical analysis is important in writing. As for my thesis, I only had one sentence which was not detailed. So, I added two or three sentences that gave insight into the following body paragraphs. Lastly, I revised every paragraph and added detailed sentences to those paragraphs that needed were not thorough enough.

For Post #3, I had to fix many sentences because they were confusing. I used the sentence focus assignment as a reference. This worksheet really helped me with understanding the basic structure of a sentence. Then, I added details without overloading the sentence. I was really careful with this step because when adding too much detail to a sentence it becomes confusing. In addition, I also had to add a few sentences in some of my body paragraphs thoroughly explaining my evidence. Lastly, Professor Cox commented that I needed to fix my bolding on my thesis. I had only bolded the first sentence of my thesis which was correct. However, I needed to bold the following sentences because it was part of my thesis.

For Post #4, I did not have to do a lot of changes. However, I did have to make a very important change. Professor Cox stated that my thesis was in my conclusion which it should not have been there. So, I decided to take my thesis out from the conclusion and replace it with my first thesis. This made a lot more sense because my first thesis was not understandable; it did not give insight into the following paragraphs. Lastly, I fixed my conclusion to tie my whole paper together. Besides fixing my thesis, I did read out loud my paper more than once and I fixed any errors along the way.

For Post #5, I only had to fix one important part of my paper, my thesis. I still had trouble with creating a concise, brief, but detailed thesis. So, I had to fix my thesis for this post because I did not give insight into my body paragraphs. Although I only had one error to fix, I decided to go over my post one last time and fix any errors along the way.
