Getting to Know My Leadership Skills and Traits

Leadership questionnaires are a great way to understand better the ways you can best lead by using capitalizing on your strengths. There are several very interesting leadership questionnaires in the book, but the two I found most interesting to try were the skills and traits questionnaires.

Through the skills questionnaire, I found that I was very strong in both interpersonal and conceptual skills. I was surprised to have scored a 30 in conceptual skill but made connections to situations where I had used conceptual skills when working in teams. In my work, I use interpersonal skills with my co-workers daily.

In the traits questionnaire, I did not expect to be above the average in categories like conscientious or diligent but found that to be the case. In many other categories, I scored around what I had expected.

I find that many of the traits that I was above average in or scored highly in are traits that I try to take advantage of to set me apart from other coworkers that may be competing for the same positions as me in the future. By being dependable at work, perceptive to opportunities and issues, and diligent in learning and growing in my job I become a better employee and prepare myself for achieving my own goals.

There are still some weaknesses that I will need to turn into strengths, and some traits that I am lacking in that I will need to compensate for. Going forward it will be important for me to be more effective in the leadership skills that I scored lower in. Likewise, I will have to overcome some of my lacking traits before improving these skills. From a managerial standpoint, it will be important for me to be more sensitive and empathic to understand what employees are experiencing, struggling with, and the way the to best manage them specifically. These changes will help me be prepared for all situations and better able to make changes, meet goals, and solve problems throughout my career.
