Comm 110 Blog Post 1

Hello everyone! My name is Marisa Schrock. I am a sophomore Communication Studies major. I’m from a small town called Berlin, PA and coming into college, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Upon visiting the communication department, I quickly realized that this major would be the right choice for me. You see… I LOVE helping people; especially kids. I hope to one day work for non-profits and/or work with deaf children. The language side of communication really fascinates me. The fact that all of God’s children can speak so many different languages, yet still find a way to understand each other is just amazing. Media today has SO much to do with this. Whether it’s watching the news, or scrolling through Instagram, there seems to always be a new way to get our points across to many different people. We are able to take a story told in another country and broadcast it all throughout America so that we can understand what others are going through on another side of the world. I don’t know about you, but I am an avid Instagram user. One way that Instagram has really upped their game is through the translation option. In 2018, we are able to see someone’s post, click translate if it’s in another language, and read what others are saying. This is all without even knowing the language we are translating. Now don’t get me wrong… not all media today is good, but there are many bonuses like these that really help us to communicate more effectively in today’s world. Communication and media can be a huge key to prosperity, it just depends on if we use the resources we have for good or not. I choose good, and I hope you do to.
