Our pledge to reduce plastic

Plastic waste is an issue that’s crucial to our customers, our employees and the communities we serve. Here Nick Amin, Aviva Group Chief Operations and IT Officer, blogs about the steps we are taking as a business to reduce our use of single-use plastic items in the UK and internationally.

As an international business, how we manage our environmental impact is fundamentally important at Aviva.

This is an area I’m passionate about personally and I’m proud to say we have made some good progress in the last few years. But it’s also an area where we have much more to do.

This message has come out loud and clear when I’ve spoken to people at Aviva around the world. Our people are at the heart of it. On the forums, they vehemently call for us to be more sustainable. They have pledged and pushed, individually and collectively, in and out of work.

The message is clear: some things are good; others are not good enough.

The conversation on plastic has, after many years, finally reached a tipping point. Experts predict that, by weight, there will be more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans by 2050 if we don’t make changes now.

At Aviva, we’re pledging to reduce the use of plastic across our markets worldwide, in a bid to help tackle the growing issue of plastic waste.

And we’ll be rolling out similar initiatives across our international locations throughout 2018.

Managing our waste — and in particular our approach to single-use plastics — is something we can all do right now. Small changes can make a big difference, so let’s make today the day to start.
