New Friends Are Just One Lunch Date Away

Work friends can be more than just people you’re friendly with at work.

I remember one time at my old lab, there was a coworker who I didn’t really know that well. We would see each other in the lab and occasionally work on projects together, but we didn’t really have much of a personal connection.

One day, she came to my desk and asked if I wanted to go grab lunch with her. I was surprised but happy to accept, and we ended up having a really great conversation over sandwiches from the cafe down the street. We talked about our lives outside of work, our hobbies and interests, and even some of the challenges we were facing in the lab.

After that lunch, we started to become better friends. We would chat more often at work, share stories and advice, and even go out for drinks after work on occasion. It was great to have a friend at the office, and I think it made both of our work lives a lot more enjoyable.

I’m grateful that she took the initiative to reach out and invite me to lunch, because it ended up being the start of a really nice friendship. It just goes to show that sometimes all it takes to form a deeper connection with a coworker is to take a step outside of your comfort zone and invite them to do something together. I’ve tried to be the person taking the initiative to form a new connection more often, and it works delightfully well.
